Give everyone a say.

Ask each traveller to choose one experience. Balance active outings with downtime, and discuss which activities you want to do together.

Build a budget around your priorities.

List transport, accommodation, food, activities and a contingency. Record the date and currency of each estimate so it is easy to update before booking.

Choose a base that works for everyone.

Compare room arrangements, location, breakfast, transport access and cancellation terms. Note your must-haves before comparing options.

Plan the essentials together.

Make a shared checklist for documents, clothing, chargers and personal essentials. Check official entry rules and activity requirements before departure.

Plan for different ages without splitting the trip

Our family combines a father, a 14-year-old and a 22-year-old. A useful starting point is one shared outing each day, one flexible choice and time when everyone can recharge. Agree which activities need the whole group and which can be optional.

Give teenagers and adult children a real role: choosing a walking route, comparing a meal stop or keeping the shared spending record. Discuss expectations before the trip rather than making every decision in a queue.

Use simple activities to make time together count

Conversation, a shared photo challenge and a relaxed meal can fit around sightseeing without adding another booking. Choose activities everyone can enjoy voluntarily, and allow quiet time too.

Build a practical family trip budget

Keep accommodation, flights, local transport, meals and tickets in separate lines. Label each quote with its date, currency, inclusions and cancellation terms. Decide which costs are shared and which are personal before paying.
